Golden Ages Total War

For many in Western Europe, the period from 900-1079AD is truly an age
of darkness, a time when the Western Romans and their Frankish
successors had collapsed, when the authority of the Pope was at a
nadir, and brutal Norse and Magyar raiders attacked their lands. Yet to
look at the 10th and 11th centuries like this is to ignore the fact
that for most of the former Roman world, this was a true Golden Age. In
Spain, Islamic architecture and culture reached a peak under the
revived Umayyad Caliphate; the Bulgarians under the great Symeon
established themselves as a world renowned superpower; and the Roman
Empire itself finally emerged triumphant over its old rival; the
Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad. And, perhaps most importantly, this was
the Golden Age of the Vikings, those great warriors and explorers, the
men who founded Russia, discovered America, and provided the ancestry
for the Normans, those great warriors of Medieval Europe.
This is, in a nutshell, what Golden Ages is all about. We are so far a
small mod, made up of myself and four other "core" members; Kornflakes,
Icedie, Kallum and SpartansAvenged, but we have established close and
cordial relations with several other impressive mods, including the
CBUR, Vacuus Lux Lucis and Bulgaria Total War. Therefore Golden Ages is
not so much an individual mod, but rather a showcase for what the
greater Total War community can achieve!
Anyway, I shall get on with the main preview. Enjoy!

Factions

Golden Ages will be released in several stages, but for the first
release, we plan to include the 15 above factions, to provide, what we
hope, will be a balanced and interesting gameplay experience. Other
factions planned for later releases include the Aghlabids, Pechenegs,
Idrisids, Norse, Ui Neill, Serbia, Moravia, Burgundy and Georgia,
though if you have any more suggestions, please feel free to submit
them! (EDIT-- I have accidentally given the Khazars the Magyar's symbol
on this image, so ignore this mistake please! )

This is a rough map of the area Golden Ages will cover, and a very
early WIP of England... We shall be using the map from the great mod,
Pro Deo et Rege, as to include the Persian Gulf, but later releases may
feature our own map.

And, now for the REALLY interesting stuff... beginning with some nice Roman weapons from CBUR.

To quote Anthonius II, the leader of the mod, they are
"From left to right...
1: Tzikourion (one hand axe for both cavalry and infantry).
2: Spathion (Cavalry's main type of double adged sword...It's name came from the latin "Spatha").
3: Paramoirion (the most common cavalry's single edged sword...It's name means the sword that hangs at the "upper leg's side")"

Our main modeller is Icedie, and here are some of his wonderful units for the British factions. Here are some Danish units

And last but by no means least, Wessex;

All credit for these pictures should go to Icedie and Plonkdog of Vaccus Lux Lucis

Now for our first faction preview!

THE TSARDOM OF BULGARIA
After the disintegration of
the old Roman Empire in the 7th century AD, Bulgaria emerged as one of
Constantinople’s biggest headaches. The Bulgars, a mysterious steppe
people, had probably descended into the Empire’s Balkan provinces
during Phokas’ reign, but by 681, after heavily defeating the Romans, a
permanent Bulgarian Empire was established.

The Bulgarian Empire
quickly became a major player on the political field, holding heavy
influence over Constantinople. In 705, the Khan Tervel helped the
deposed Roman Emperor Justinian II reclaim his throne, and in 718, it
was Bulgarian intervention that spared Constantinople the fate of the
other three eastern Patriarchates, by crushingly defeating a vast
Umayyad army. Tervel returned to Bulgaria a hero, and was named the
“Saviour of Europe” even within his own lifespan.

The Bulgarians might have
come to the aid of Constantinople this time, but in all other respects,
the seat of the Roman Empire marked for them a mixture of both hatred
and longing. Again and again the Khans, including the great Krum, led
armies against the massive defences of the Queen of Cities, again and
again they were defeated. Roman armies were destroyed and Emperors
captured, but Constantinople remained inviolate.

It is a true irony though,
that now the Bulgarians have given up their paganism to follow the
Orthodox Christianity controlled by Constantinople, that they have a
true chance of defeating their great rival once and for all. The Khan,
Symeon the Great, has adopted a new Imperial title “Caesar of the
Bulgarians and Romans” or, in his own language, “Tsar”. Symeon is the
most energetic and powerful ruler Bulgaria has yet seen. Under him,
there is every chance the Bulgaria could destroy her greatest rival,
and become the sole power of the Orthodox Church…

Os mantendré informados. Saludos;

Me parece bastante fuerte la inexactitud histórica del juego si pretende inciarse en el 900.
